RosieQueen Latifah was born Dana Elaine Owens on March 18, 1970, in Newark, New Jersey. Latifah was the second daughter born to Lance and Rita Owens. She is most well-known for her social activism, acting abilities, and ability to rhyme. When she was 8 years old, her cousin from Islam named her Latifah which means "delicate" and "sensitive" in Arabic. Latifah started singing in the Shiloh Baptist Church's choir located in Bloomfield, New Jersey. Her first performance was when she sang "Home" as the character of Dorothy in the production of The Wizard of Oz at St. Anne's Parochial School. Latifah's mother was the catalyst; she was in touch with the children and music. Mark James, the local disc jockey, was requested by Latifah's daughter to perform during the dance. Mark the 45 King, was invited to perform at a dance school.
